Amazon Kindle 4 – Some Questions

But both current Kindle readers and people who do not yet own an electronic reading device have a host of questions regarding this newer model.

How much will it cost?

When will it be ready?

Here we can certainly take an educated guess at most of them simply from the information that is already available online. Firstly, there is every chance that we shall be reading using a color Kindle 4 in the not so distant future.

This is certainly more than just a dream. The fact of the matter is that a color electronic display is already a reality. At the moment a company called E Ink makes the screens for the Kindle 3. But the point is that they are really designed to do different tasks. The Kindle has one primary function which is to allow its users to read electronic books. The iPad on the other hand offers a wider range of capabilities but does not have one specific function. The Kindle is more functional while the iPad is cooler. Bringing out a Kindle with a color screen might not add too much functionality but it certainly gives this gadget an improved ‘coolness’ factor.

As you will have gathered from the preceding paragraphs, a color screen does not necessitate an LCD display. There is no doubt that LCD screens can operate at higher resolutions. After all, this is the type of screens that computers use. But electronic paper displays offer some advantages of their own. These include a far superior battery life when compared to devices like laptops, mobile phones and the iPad. The current version of the Kindle reader can go for one month between battery charges. Secondly, reading with the Amazon Kindle really is just the same as reading a book, as far as your eyes are concerned. The reader will not get a get a headache or feel the effects of eye strain from using the Kindle. They are definitely more relaxing to use than looking at a computer screen for a long time.

Another cool feature that the iPad offers is its touch ability. The 3rd generation Kindle makes use of a small QWERTY keyboard that sits at the bottom of the device. However, whether the Kindle 4 will still have a keyboard or not is still unknown. Developments in this area include Amazon’s purchase of a company called TouchCo in 2010. This firm was developing touch functionality for electronic paper displays. Indeed, at the time of their purchase, they had already invented working prototypes.

To date there has been no announcement from Amazon other than to say that it is still a long way off. So for now we will accept that there are three versions of the Kindle. The first one came on sale in November 2007. That was just over three years ago. So if they stick to a similar time scale it may be possible to purchase a Kindle 4 before the end of 2011. Bringing out the next version then would ensure record breaking sales in the run up to Christmas. But potentially more important to Amazon than short term profit is ensuring that the Kindle 4 electronic reader is the best device of its type.

Therefore rather than working towards a sales timetable, it seems highly likely that they will only bring out the next generation of their bestselling handset when the device is good and ready and this might not be until 2012.

Amazon Kindle DX – Some Ideas

You might or might not know that Amazon has come out with yet another new eReader. That’s three new Kindles in total that Amazon now has for sale, each with their own differences.

If a person loves to read and decides on the Kindle 2 for their reading habits you should also checkout the Kindle DX as it is a little cheaper.

You can buy a Kindle 2 for about $259. For the larger Kindle DX you are going to have to pay about $489.

That great difference in price is enough for most people to only consider the Kindle 2, but if you can afford it and you would prefer to have PDF’s files, the DX might be the better choice.

The viewing area for the Kindle 2 is 6″, while the DX viewing area measures a massive 9.7″. For anyone that needs to use a larger font size on the Kindle DX, you will find that you can use the larger font size and still have a good amount of content per page displayed per page view. What is meant by that is that when using the eBook with one of the two largest font sizes the amount of text displayed per page is greatly decreased.

Less text per page means more page turns than if you were using a smaller text size.

The Kindle 2 weighs in at just over 10 ounces. It’s a good weight and easy to get comfortable with and is easier to hold for long periods of time than a regular paper book.

The Kindle DX weighs in at about 19 ounces which makes it almost twice as heavy as the Kindle 2 but it is still much easier to hold than a paper back and definitely easier to hold than a hard back book.

The Kindle DX has a smaller Keyboard with all the same buttons which give you more room for the large display. The DX keyboard is a convenient size, although the Kindle 2 with a larger area used for the keyboard works just fine, it doesn’t seem oversized or anything like that, but if it were smaller it might be just as easy to work with.

The DX only has the page forward and page back buttons on the right side of the unit whereas the Kindle 2 has the page turn buttons on both the right and the left sides. You will like being able to hold the Kindle with either hand and will find yourself switching from hand to hand frequently.

Another big difference between the Kindle 2 and the DX is the amount of memory that each unit has built in. Amazon says the Kindle 2 will hold about 1500 books, news papers or magazines or whatever and that’s plenty for most people. This is more than most people will ever have on their shelves!

Amazon says the Kindle DX will hold up to 3500 books or newspapers or magazines or PDF files or whatever. This is a huge amount of available literature.

It would take a long time for the average reader to fill up the DX but for those who are serious book collectors you might some day run out of room for more. One very nice thing that Amazon does is keep a copy of everything you have that you bought from the Amazon store. If you run out of room you can delete books and make room for more. If you want it back you can download it again from Amazon for free.

Everyone thought that adding color would be the only feature that would make the Kindle 3 stand above the Kindle 2. But here we find that Amazon’s plans were different: ‘Color does not improve the readability of the screen’. ‘Books are also written in black and white’. And here they were right. Color is really a distraction and does not improve readability as we can only confirm in our eReader review.

Features – Software and Hardware

Some of the features of Kindle 2 are present in Kindle 3, such as social networking, 60 second book download, and centered features, free 3G access to Kindle Store, cross-platform book sharing and free 3G accesses to over 100 different countries. The improvements that have been made in Kindle 3 however have made the eReader more reliable, certainly more user friendly and are providing an even better reading experience.

Kindle 3 has been made even more portable by reducing its size to 7.5″ x 4.8″ x 1.335″. With this reduction in size the device has come down in weight to 8.7 ounces and the screen has come down to 6″. As a result the reader has become much lighter, thinner and smaller which has greatly improved the readability as we noticed in our Kindle 3 review.

Just looking at the eBook in this Kindle 3 review we noticed that it has undergone a lot of ergonomic changes. Amazon has really done a fine job and seems to have given a lot of thought to designing it. For example the page turn buttons have become handier and now work silently. The buttons that were wider in the earlier version have been made one quarter of an inch and have > and < as labels in place of words and are now placed on both sides of the screen. The ease of use has improved considerably as you can read throughout this Kindle 3 review.

The Kindle 3 has been designed not only for the bright eyed, it has been designed for those with impaired vision enabling them to use the Kindle 3. This is because Kindle 3 has been produced with a feature that can read out menus and item descriptions. This is one of the great features we came across while reviewing the Kindle 3.

Not adding any color support and touch screen to Kindle 3 probably was a wise decision taken by Amazon. Kindle 3 has a far superior readability as mentioned before in this Kindle 3 review.

With all the new features Kindle 3 has to offer is that without doubt it is the most powerful eReader that is available and it also offers great value for your money. In our Kindle 3 review we chose the white Kindle 3, but you can have a graphite color as well, which is really attractive. All in all we are very pleased with the Kindle 3 and feel that it is well worth every penny you will pay for it.

My personal review of the Amazon Kindle 3 ebook reader
I just bought mine over the weekend and played around with it to familiarise my self with the reading device. It is my first e-book reader and was immediately pleased by the screen and the reading experience.

I like the bit where I can use my Wi-Fi in hotspots. It allows for seamless reading with 20% Faster Page Turns. It also came with enhanced PDF Reader – dictionary lookup, notes, and highlights.

A little Downside though: I have experienced some sudden freezing on my Kindle 3 and then shutting down and rebooting itself several times. Doesn’t seem to happen very often, but it is noteworthy.

Overall, I am satisfied thus far and I believe the price is a steal for what it offers. You have to see it to appreciate it.
