Excerpt from “A brief guide to world domination review“  … So I just finished reading a brief guide to world domination “how to live a remarkable life in a conventional world” from Chris Guillebeau, and man is this a powerful read! It’s only going to take you an hour to read, and if you are a slow reader like me, one and a half. After reading it you really feel ready to attack life immediately. I got a few points from it, but the one that sticks out the most is: you can achieve your goal in life by giving up the old assumptions, expectations and you get out of your comfort zone.

I will say this is not for everyone though. If you are the kind of person tired of living an average life and you don’t want to take life under your own terms and make a positive difference in others, then you should stop reading this post right now.

Chris Guillebeau has been challenging authority since 1978. He’s traveled to over 100 countries and will have visited every country in the world by 2012. Chris Guillebeau: I define it as refusing to accept other peoples’ ideas and expectations as your own, at least not without close examination. A key part of the message is, You don’t have to live your life the way other people expect you to. In the book’s prologue, I write about the idea of bridge-jumping—how when you’re a kid you hear the question, If everyone else jumped off the bridge, would you? But then you grow up and everyone around you is making the same kinds of choices, effectively jumping off the same bridge. Chris Guillebeau has a gift for reteaching loveliness — through his words as well as his example.

Chris advocates not letting overblown fears get in the way of your life. But really, 95% of the people I?ve met have been friendly.? Chris describes choices that enable him to learn and grow in ways that that will not appeal to everyone. And yet, you do not have to aspire to become a person to learn from them about yourself. Chris shows through his own and others example that it is possible if we stay focused on some pretty basic principles. I am re-energized in my own dreams by his practical, down-to-earth suggestions and hope to encourage both of my children to set their own rules and change the world !

Chris says that “The only things you?ll need to give up are assumptions, expectations, and the comfort zone that holds you back from greatness.” I certainly have given up on assumptions and expectations. The comfort zone is still something that holds me back. Chris wanted comments, feedback and thoughts on the issue. I skimmed through the comments and was surprised to find that most of the comments ends up straying from the issue and attempts to define SUCCESS.

Chris reminds us to take our dreams seriously and to challenge the conventional by asking what it is we truly want out of life. You can’t make something out of your life, he says, unless you know where it is you want to go. Chris is visiting every country in the world. My goal is to attend every conference. Chris G’s manifestos were some of the first manuscripts that I read when entering the blogosphere. His attitude is something that I constantly look up to, and respect.

Unlike many aspirants to the Tim Ferriss throne, Chris actually lives the life he preaches, and his approach introduces some new and exciting practices into the broader conversation. Ultimately, it is the practical tips that separate the work from standard “be the change you want to see in the world” fluff, and make it an essential read. Unlike most self-help books, this is grounded in solid experimental work. The only downside is that the actual text is a bit dull, and attempts to lighten it (e.g., with a series of unfunny jokes and cartoons about a creative caveman and his dim sidekick) fall flat.
